In the 1950s Washington, Hawkins Fuller "Hawk" (Matt Bomer) is a war hero moving up the ladder at the State Department. Everything changes when Hawk meets religious Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Baily): they begin an affair that puts them in jeopardy.
The epic love story between them passes through purges, wars, protests, and plagues, overcoming obstacles in the world.
Hawk marries Lucy, and Tim has become an AIDS activist in San Francisco. In 1986, Hawk seeks redemption as Tim makes a wrenching decision that will change Hawk's life forever.
