Peter (Michael Urie) is a social media strategist living in Los Angeles. He is tired of his family constantly asking him about his single status during their holiday visits. To avoid awkward conversations, Peter convinces his roommate Nick to travel to New Hampshire with him, pretending that they are in a romantic relationship.
Just before they announce their fake relationship, Peter's mom informs him that she has arranged a blind date for him with her fitness instructor, James (Luke Macfarlane). Despite his reluctance, Peter agrees to go on the date, spurred on by his mother's encouragement. Meanwhile, Nick confesses his feelings for Peter, but Peter is apprehensive about risking their friendship.
On Christmas Day, Peter surprises his family by announcing that he plans to move to New Hampshire with his new boyfriend.
