T.K. is a firefighter. After his boyfriend dumped him, he decisively moved to Texas with his dad to start fresh. Carlos is a cop and asks T.K. out on a date after a night together. T.K. is not ready to enter a new relationship until something forces him to reconsider.
T.K. and Carlos go from dating to a committed relationship. They meet each otherìs parents, move in together, and survive a house fire, which brings them closer and makes them a stronger couple.
T.K. and Carlos begin the season estranged by misunderstandings, especially over buying a house. However, when a catastrophic ice storm hits, and T.K. nearly dies from hypothermia, they are compelled to confront their feelings and acknowledge the depth of their bond. This difficult experience brings them back together and ends with a proposal.
Carlos and TK are planning their wedding, but the task proves to be more time-consuming than expected. Meanwhile Carlos's father tries to recruit him to the Rangers, causing a rift to form between the two. Before the wedding, a tragedy threatens to ruin the ceremony.
The couple celebrates their first anniversary, but Carlos is quickly wrapped back up in the ongoing investigation into his father’s murder. Yet, Carlos begins to make more of an effort in his marriage, and he helps plan an extravagant party for TK’s birthday, where his stepfather, Enzo (Henry Ian Cusick), appears with TK's little brother, Jonah.
TK floats the idea to Carlos that they should adopt Jonah, but he has a fear of fatherhood that’s only exacerbated by the mystery surrounding Gabriel’s death.
